HAIR LOSS FOR MEN

About Hair Loss for Men

Men's Hair Graft - MVP DesignCommonly referred to as male pattern baldness or MPB the condition known as Androgenic Alopecia is universally accepted as the primary cause for the majority of male hair loss.  Despite the many possible causes for male hair loss which can include major illnesses, adverse reaction to prescription medications and in less frequent instances very stressful life events, the vast majority of male hair loss can be directly linked to heredity.

An inherited genetic sensitively to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) targeted at male hair follicles is at the core of  men suffering from male pattern baldness. A miniaturization of the hair follicles sensitive to DHT begins to occur limiting the lifespan of each individual hair follicle and eventually shutting down the ability for the follicle to produce cosmetically viable hair.

Typical characteristics of male pattern baldness onset begin with a noticeable recession of the hairline and thinning of the hair on top of the head. The most sensitive areas of the head  prone to DHT appear to be located near the temples and mid-anterior portions of the scalp.

The gradual progression of hair loss into a more noticeable baldness affects the entire top of the head and can eventually lead to a rim or “horseshoe” pattern during the advanced stages of male pattern baldness. In some males DHT can even impact this remaining rim of hair.

Diagnosis of male pattern baldness is typically based on the general pattern and appearance of the hair loss combined with a comprehensive medical history incorporating any details of prevalent hair loss in your family. A qualified medical professional with expertise in hair loss should thoroughly examine the scalp with the aid of magnification (ideally with a device know as a densitometer) to make an accurate assessment of hair follicles and the degree of miniaturization. This examination and assessment is critical to establishing a proper treatment plan.

Various featured “hair clinics” may attempt to recommend a expensive hair analysis or scalp biopsy procedure to accurately determine the reason for your hair loss. The primary purpose of hair analysis is to rule out the possibility of hair loss induced by poisonous substances.

While such a hair analysis can be useful to detect elements such as arsenic or lead; however, hair loss resulting from poisoning does not factor into a typical pattern of male baldness. It is wise to avoid these clinics and seek the care of a qualified doctor who can conduct a proper examination and further assist you in determination of the best treatment options
